Francesco Bonami Biography

Contemporary art curator of international renown Francesco Bonami was born in Florence then moved to New York in the mid-1980s where he started working as curator. During the period 1995-2014 has was artistic director of the Foundation Sandretto ReRebaudengo per l’Arte in Turin. From 2004 to 2008 he was artistic director of the Centro di Arte Contemporanea at Villa Manin. Moreover he has been working with international companies including Enel Yoox and UBS on several art projects; at the moment he is Valentino’s ‘publishing consultant’ and curator of the exhibition programme for Phillips. In 2012 he was hired as consultant on contemporary art programmes by the Council for Culture of the City of Milan.
In 2003 he directed the 50th edition of the Venice Biennale in 2010 he curated the 75th Whitney Biennial of American Art in 2000 he curated Manifesta 3 in Ljubljana and in 1997 the Santa Fe ‘Biennale.
In Chicago he worked as Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art where he organized the first Jeff Koons retrospective. He helped organise exhibitions featuring some of the most famous artists on the contemporary scene from Damien Hirst to Maurizio Cattelan. He worked for the Gagosian Gallery for the Pinault Foundation for the Museum of Qatar the Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis the National Museum in Seoul PS1 in New York the Hara Museum in Tokyo.
