O'Hanlon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended Villanova University, where he graduated in 1970. Despite being a Philadelphia 76ers draught selection in the 8th round of the 1970 NBA draught, he played professional basketball with the ABA's Miami Floridians in 1970-71.
