Fran Lebowitz is an iconic American author, essayist, public speaker, and social critic, celebrated for her sharp wit and observations on modern life, urban society, and politics. A New Jersey native, she was expelled from high school for "nonspecific surliness" and moved to New York City at 18, working odd jobs before writing for Andy Warhol's “Interview” magazine and “Mademoiselle”.
Her debut collection, “Metropolitan Life” (1978), and its follow-up, “Social Studies” (1981), became bestsellers, blending humor with biting social commentary. Her essays are compiled in "The Fran Lebowitz Reader". She was the central focus of Martin Scorsese's “Pretend It's a City” (2021) on Netflix.
