About Four Tet

Four Tet Biography

Kieran Hebden (born 1978 in London, England) is a post-rock and electronic artist who goes by the pseudonym Four Tet. Hebden rose to popularity as a member of the band Fridge before breaking out as a solo artist under the moniker Four Tet. Hebden's work usually rejects the standard pop song format in favor of a more abstract approach, including elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music combined with live instruments. He went to Elliott School in London, where he and friends Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers founded the band Fridge. When Hebden was 15, the band got a recording contract and released their debut album in March 1997. In 1998, Hebden debuted as Four Tet with the 36-minute, 25-second song "Thirtysixtwentyfive" on Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings label. Later that year, he released his second song, "Misnomer," which was jazz-influenced. Four Tet's debut full-length album, "Dialogue," was released on Output in 1999 and combined hip hop drum patterns with discordant jazz samples. This was followed by Four Tet's final Output release, the double A-side single "Glasshead"/"Calamine." Warp Records published “Warp 10 + 3: Remixes” in late 1999, a tenth-anniversary compilation of remixes of Warp tunes. Hebden remixed the first track from Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Volume II." This unusually high-profile exposure piqued the curiosity of lovers of electronica and intellectual dance music, genres for which the Warp label is well-known. Four Tet's second album, "Pause," was released on Domino Records in 2001, and featured Hebden using more folk and electronic samples. In May 2003, he released his next album, "Rounds." The album's three hits were "She Moves She," "As Serious as Your Life," and "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth." “Live in Copenhagen 30th March 2004,” a limited edition live record, was published in April 2004. Four Tet presented two improvised music concerts in Paris and London in March and April 2005, in cooperation with jazz percussionist Steve Reid. He also performed on the 2005 CD "Spirit Walk" by the Steve Reid Ensemble. Over the course of 2005 and 2006, this cooperation was expanded into a series of international tours and the publication of two CDs, "The Exchange Session Vol. 1" and "The Exchange Session Vol. 2." In May 2005, Domino released his fourth studio album, "Everything Ecstatic." Domino published a DVD edition of "Everything Ecstatic" in November 2005, which included video segments for each track on the album as well as an album with new material named "Everything Ecstatic Part 2," which was eventually released as an independent EP. Domino Records published “Remixes,” a two-disc anthology of Four Tet remixes, in September 2006. The first disc included twelve Four Tet remixes chosen by Hebden, while the second disc contained every official remix of Four Tet tracks to date (both by Hebden himself and by other artists), many of which had previously only been released on vinyl. In April 2008, a new EP, "Ringer," was released. Hebden worked with composer David Arnold in 2008 to produce "Crawl, End Crawl," which was used for the end credits of the 2008 James Bond film "Quantum of Solace." “There Is Love in You,” Four Tet's fifth full-length album, was released in January 2010. The album was preceded by the limited edition release of the 12th single, "Love Cry." In 2011, Hebden released "Ego"/"Mirror," a split 12" with Burial and Thom Yorke. Hebden has also remixed music by Tegan And Sara, Madvillain, Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, Super Furry Animals, Beth Orton, Badly Drawn Boy, CYNE, The Notwist, Boom Bip, Battles, Kings of Convenience, Lars Horntveth, Bonobo, Rothko, The xx, Thom Yorke, and Radiohead as Four Tet.
