Fatou Bensouda Biography

Mrs. Fatou Bensouda of The Gambia was unanimously elected Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court by the Assembly of States Parties on December 12, 2011. Mrs. Bensouda took her oath of office on June 15, 2012. Mrs. Bensouda formerly served as ICC Deputy Prosecutor (Prosecutions), having been chosen with an overwhelming majority by the Assembly of States Parties on 8 August 2004 and serving in that capacity until May 2012. Mrs. Bensouda formerly served as a Legal Adviser and Trial Attorney at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania, where she rose to the rank of Senior Legal Advisor and Head of The Legal Advisory Unit. She was the General Manager of a prominent commercial bank in The Gambia before joining the ICTR. Between 1987 and 2000, she served as Senior State Counsel, Principal State Counsel, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Solicitor General and Legal Secretary of the Republic, and Attorney General and Minister of Justice, in which capacity she served as Chief Legal Advisor to The Republic of The Gambia's President and Cabinet. Mrs. Bensouda also participated in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) treaty talks, as well as the West African Parliament and the ECOWAS Tribunal. She has represented The Gambia in United Nations conferences on crime prevention, Ministerial Sessions of the Organization of African Unity on Human Rights, and meetings of the Preparatory Commission for the International Criminal Court. Mrs. Bensouda is The Gambia's first international maritime law expert, having earned a master's degree in International Maritime Law and Law of the Sea.
