About Faith Ringgold
Faith Ringgold Biography
Faith Ringgold is a painter, media artist, author, educator, and speaker. She got her B.S. and M.A. degrees in visual art from the City College of New York in 1955 and 1959. Educator Emeritus of Art at the University of California in San Diego, Ringgold has gotten 23 Honorary Doctorates. During the mid-1960s, Ringgold went to Europe. She made her first political works of art, The American People Series from 1963 to 1967, and had her first and second one-individual shows at the Spectrum Gallery in New York. It depicts the American way of life according to the Civil Rights development and outlines these racial connections from a lady's perspective. This assortment poses the inquiry "why?" about some fundamental racial issues in American culture. In the mid-1970s, Ringgold started making tankas (propelled by a Tibetan work of art framed in luxuriously brocaded textures), delicate figures, and masks. She later used this medium in her concealed exhibitions of the 1970s and 80s. In spite of the fact that Faith Ringgold's craft was at first roused by African workmanship during the 1960s, it was not until the late 1970s that she went to Nigeria and Ghana to see the rich custom of veils that have kept on being her most prominent impact. She made her first blanket, Echoes of Harlem, in 1980, in a joint effort with her mom, Madame Willi Posey. The blankets were an augmentation of her tankas from the 1970s. In any case, these artworks were circumscribed with texture as well as stitched, making her a one of a kind method of painting using the blanket medium. Ringgold's first story quilt Who's Afraid of Aunt Jemima? was written in 1983 as a method of distributing her unedited words. The expansion of text to her blankets has formed into an exceptional medium and style all her own. Ringgold has been an activist since the 1970s, partaking in a few women's activists and anti-racist associations.
