Faith Ringgold is a painter, media artist, author, educator, and speaker. She got her B.S. and M.A. degrees in visual art from the City College of New York in 1955 and 1959. Educator Emeritus of Art at the University of California in San Diego, Ringgold has gotten 23 Honorary Doctorates. During the mid-1960s, Ringgold went to Europe.
She made her first political works of art, The American People Series from 1963 to 1967, and had her first and second one-individual shows at the Spectrum Gallery in New York. It depicts the American way of life according to the Civil Rights development and outlines these racial connections from a lady's perspective.
