Evan S. Medeiros Biography

Evan S. Medeiros is the head of Eurasia Group's Asia-Pacific coverage, a region with unrivaled prospects for global business. His Asia team, which is the firm's largest practice group, assists customers in better understanding and navigating developed and emerging markets by analyzing risk and developing plans and tactics to capitalize on possibilities. Evan left his post as special assistant to the president and senior director for Asian affairs in the National Security Council of the White House in June 2015. (NSC). Evan was President Barack Obama's senior Asia-Pacific adviser at the time and was in charge of coordinating US strategy in the region across diplomacy, defense policy, economic policy, and intelligence affairs. Evan worked for the National Security Council for nearly six years, during which time he was heavily involved in US-China relations, including developing the initial proposal for the Sunnylands Summit, planning the president's successful summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in fall 2014, and managing a number of other high-level US-China interactions. Evan formerly worked at the RAND Corporation as a senior political scientist, focusing on East Asian international politics, Chinese foreign and national security policy, US-China relations, and Chinese military and security problems. He also worked in the Treasury Department as a policy counselor to the special envoy for China and the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue. Evan has a doctorate in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as a master of philosophy in international relations from the University of Cambridge (where he was a Fulbright Scholar), a master's degree in China studies from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies, and a bachelor's degree in analytic philosophy from the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. On a variety of Asian security concerns, he has authored many books and magazine articles. He co-authored “Pacific Currents: The Responses of US Allies and Security Partners in East Asia to China's Rise” (RAND Corporation, 2009) and published “China's International Behavior: Activism, Opportunism, and Diversification” (RAND Corporation, 2009). He also authored “Reluctant Restraint: The Evolution of China's Nonproliferation Policies and Practices, 1980-2004,” an internationally acclaimed book (Stanford University Press, 2007).
