Eva Mackinley founded The Last Straw a campaign whose mission is to reduce the use of plastic straws and single-use plastics around Australia. She was motivated to kick it off after noticing how many straws were being thrown away at the bar she was working at. Since its foundation in 2015 The Last Straw has brought on over 500 venues in Australia and seen the establishment of Last Straw groups in Peru Indonesia and Kenya. In 2018 alone they helped stop over 13 million plastic straws from entering the waste system.
Since 2015 the movement has grown to over 500 member venues across Australia 60000 views of the venue map signing on Grill'd and the Sydney Opera House and appearing in major media outlets like SBS National the National Geographic Virgin's Voyeur magazine Triple J's Hack War on Waste Season 2 and The Project.
