Ethan Kross is an American experimental psychologist, neuroscientist, and author. He is a professor of psychology and management at the University of Michigan, where he directs the Emotion & Self Control Laboratory. Specializing in emotion regulation, Kross examines how self-talk and introspective thinking influence health, performance, decision-making, and relationships. He earned a B.A.
from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship in social-affective neuroscience. His bestselling books, “Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It” (2021) and “Shift: Managing Your Emotions So They Don’t Manage You” (2025), offer science-backed tools for managing negative self-talk.
