Erskine Boyce Bowles, an American businessman and politician from North Carolina, was born on August 8, 1945. He was the President of the University of North Carolina System from 2005 until 2010. He was White House Chief of Staff from 1997 to 1998, and he campaigned unsuccessfully for a United States Senate seat in North Carolina in 2002 and 2004.
Bowles, together with Alan K. Simpson, was the Democratic co-chair of President Barack Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform in 2010. The Campaign to Fix the Debt, which Bowles and Simpson co-lead, is a corporate organization.
