Erica Jong was born and reared in New York City, on Manhattan's Upper West Side. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in English from Barnard College and an M.A. in 18th Century English Literature from Columbia University after attending New York's elite High School of Music and Art. She dropped out of Columbia before finishing her Ph.D. in order to write Fear of Flying. She eventually returned to Columbia, where she studied poetry under Stanley Kunitz and Mark Strand at the Columbia School of the Arts.
