Eric Koston Biography

In 1991, Eric Koston joined the H-Street team and began his professional career. For six months, he stayed in the H-Street home in San Diego. When Natas Kaupas got him into the 101 teams in 1992, Koston went to Los Angeles. He established himself as a top switch stance skateboarder on 101, pioneering technical tricks including the nollie flip noseslide and the switch kickflip backside tailside, as well as doing a switch 360 flip down the Embarcadero 7 during his role in 101's 1993 movie Falling Down. While many people believe that either Koston or Karl Watson developed the crooked grind (nicknamed the K-grind after Karl or Eric K), Dan Peterka was the one who came up with the idea. The grind was dubbed k(oston)-grind after Koston's mastery of the technique since the name Peterka was difficult to say and he was observed executing front-foot flips out of the grind a short time after its invention. It was eventually shortened to crooked grind because Koston was too modest to claim credit for a grind he did not develop. Rick Howard and Mike Carroll founded Girl in 1993, and Koston was invited to join the team. He accepted and immediately rose to prominence as one of Girl's most important skaters, even developing his own trick, the Fandangle, a one-footed crooked grind. In 1996, Thrasher Magazine named Eric Koston the Skater of the Year. He is one of the proprietors of the Fourstar apparel brand.
