At Columbia University, where he earned his B.A. and Ph.D., Eric Foner is a DeWitt Clinton Professor of History. Foner concentrates on slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and nineteenth-century America in his teaching and scholarship.

He won the Los Angeles Times, Bancroft and Parkman Book prizes for his Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877, which still remains standard history of the period. He published his book The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery in 2010. At Columbia University, Foner received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2006.
