Eric Foner Biography

At Columbia University, where he earned his B.A. and Ph.D., Eric Foner is a DeWitt Clinton Professor of History. Foner concentrates on slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and nineteenth-century America in his teaching and scholarship. He won the Los Angeles Times, Bancroft and Parkman Book prizes for his Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863–1877, which still remains standard history of the period. He published his book The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery in 2010. At Columbia University, Foner received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2006. He also served at the Society of American Historians, as president of the Organization of American Historians, and at the American Historical Association.
