Eric Bieniemy Biography

Eric Bieniemy Jr. is an American football coach and former player who now serves as the offensive coordinator for the National Football League's Kansas City Chiefs. He was an unanimous All-American while playing college football for the Colorado Buffaloes. The San Diego Chargers chose him in the second round, 39th overall, in the 1991 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles. Bieniemy returned to Colorado after his playing career ended to serve as the running backs coach. He was the offensive coordinator at Colorado before becoming the Chiefs' running backs coach. As an NFL running backs coach, he tutored Adrian Peterson and Jamaal Charles, who combined for seven pro bowl appearances in eight seasons. Andy Reid, the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, hired Bieniemy as the running backs coach. Reid knew Bieniemy from his time as a coach with the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid promoted Bieniemy to offensive coordinator in 2018 to replace Matt Nagy, who was appointed as head coach of the Chicago Bears. The Chiefs ranked #1 in the NFL in yards per game and points scored in Bieniemy's first season as offensive coordinator. With 565 points, the Chiefs had the third-highest scoring season in NFL history. In addition, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, along with Peyton Manning, became the second quarterback in NFL history to pass for 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in a season. The Chiefs advanced to the 2018 AFC Championship Game, where they were defeated by the New England Patriots. Bieniemy won his first Super Bowl the following season, when the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20 in Super Bowl LIV.
