About Eric Allen

Eric Allen Biography

Eric Andre Allen (born November 22, 1965) is a former professional American football cornerback who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, and Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) from 1988 to 2001. Allen, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, resigned from football following the 2001 season and now works for ESPN as an NFL commentator. He has 54 interceptions for 827 yards and eight touchdowns in his NFL career, as well as seven fumble recoveries. He is tied for 21st in NFL history with 54 interceptions. Allen attended Arizona State University and was a member of the football team. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Allen in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft. Allen spent seven seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, three with the New Orleans Saints, and four with the Oakland Raiders. He was a popular player with the Eagles' Gang Green Defense, where he played with NFL greats Reggie White, Seth Joyner, and Wes Hopkins. He is the first player in NFL history to return three or more interceptions for touchdowns in two different seasons. On October 3, 1993, in a game against the New York Jets, Allen made one of his most memorable plays. The Eagles were behind the Jets by two points late in the fourth quarter after losing their starting quarterback (Randall Cunningham) to a broken fibula early in the game. The Jets marched downfield for what would likely be the game's last scores. Boomer Esiason, the Jets' quarterback, tried a first-down pass within the Eagles' 10-yard line, but Allen stepped in front of the intended receiver at the 6-yard line. Steve Sabol of NFL Films named the subsequent 94-yard touchdown return the Greatest Interception Return in NFL History. Allen blew out his knee on November 15, 1998, while playing for the Oakland Raiders against the Seattle Seahawks, after several successful and injury-free seasons in Philadelphia and New Orleans. He missed the remainder of the season. But he bounced back in 2000, having a memorable season with six interceptions, including a team-high three for touchdowns. The first annual Eric Turner award for the Raiders' most outstanding defensive player was given to him by his teammates. The award was established in remembrance of Oakland's free safety, who died of stomach cancer in May of 2000. Allen joined ESPN as an NFL studio commentator in August 2002. Allen is most known for his work as an NFL commentator on ESPN's Sportscenter.
