Emmanuelle Marie Charpentier is a French microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry professor and researcher. She has been the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology since 2015. Charpentier is well recognized for her work in unraveling the molecular underpinnings of the bacterial CRISPR/Cas9 immune system and repurposing it as a genome editing tool.
She discovered a unique method for the development of a non-coding RNA that is critical to the function of CRISPR/Cas9. Charpentier's team demonstrated that Cas9 could be used to produce cuts in any DNA sequence requested in conjunction with Jennifer Doudna's laboratory. The approach they devised included combining Cas9 with easily synthesized synthetic guide RNA molecules.
