Emmanuelle Marie Charpentier is a French microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry professor and researcher. She has been the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology since 2015. The approach they devised included combining Cas9 with easily synthesized synthetic guide RNA molecules.
