He was a standout talent out of North Carolina A&T who was selected in the third round of the 1968 AFL/NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers. He was a steal for a third-round pick, according to most experts.
With the benefit of hindsight and 16 seasons of exceptional performance with the Oilers, it's reasonable to say he was more than a steal; he was easily one of the finest players taken, and that in a draught that produced three future Hall of Fame players in Larry Csonka, Art Shell, and Ron Yary.
