Ellen 't Hoen works as a consultant in the field of medical law and policy. She developed the Drugs Patent Pool at WHO/UNITAID in 2009 to use patent licensing to hasten the supply of low-cost HIV therapies, particularly antiretroviral medicines, in poor countries. She stood down from the MPP in June 2012, although she continues to support it.
She is a research fellow at the University of Amsterdam's IS HIV/AIDS Academy and the author of The Global Politics of Pharmaceutical Monopoly Power. Patents on drugs, access to them, innovation, and the implementation of the WTO's Doha Declaration on TRIPS and Public Health. It may be downloaded for free.
