Elizabeth Stordeur Pryor Biography

Elizabeth Stordeur Pryor specializes on 19th-century American history and racial relations. Her first book, Colored Travelers: Mobility and the Fight for Citizenship Before the Civil War, is a social history of black activists who battled against segregation on public transportation long before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. Pryor contends that their protest brought the cars, compartments, and cabins of public transit to the forefront of the struggle for equal rights in the nineteenth century. Her paper, “The Etymology of [the n-word]: Resistance, Language, and the Politics of Freedom in the Antebellum North,” was awarded the Ralph D. Gray Prize for the best article published in the Journal of the Early Republic in 2016. Her next project, motivated by the essay as well as her teaching at Smith College, is a historical and pedagogical examination of the n-word, framed in part by her own experience as a biracial woman in the United States. In the classroom, Pryor is interested in issues of citizenship, race and racism, and the history of slavery in the United States, paying close attention to how enslaved people's experiences are remembered and who remembers them. Her lessons are intended to assist students discover links between anti-blackness in the past and anti-blackness in the present. She received a student-government teaching award in 2011 and the Sherrerd Prize for Distinguished Teaching at Smith in 2016.
