Elissa Epel Biography

Elissa Epel is an Associate Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. She is a psychologist who studies the subtleties and depths of the mind-body relationship. She discovered that persistent psychological stress wears down the telomeres, the protecting tips of chromosomes, approximately a decade earlier than predicted, with the help of her colleague Elizabeth Blackburn (Nobel Laureate, 2009) and a team of collaborators. Telomeres are linked to how we live and our daily lifestyle choices, and telomeres, in turn, predict early disease and mortality. Epel will discuss how our personality, mentality, and lifestyle may either speed up or slow down our biological aging. Epel graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Psychology and Yale University with a Ph.D. in Health Psychology. The American Psychological Association's Early Career Award was given to her.
