Edward Paul Lazear Biography

Since 1985, Edward P. Lazear has been the Morris Arnold and Nona Jean Cox Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and since 1992, he has also been the Davies Family Professor of Economics at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Professor Lazear was previously the Brown Professor of Urban and Labor Economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. From 2006 until 2009, Lazear was Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers and worked at the White House. He counseled the President on a wide variety of topics involving both macroeconomic and microeconomic concerns in his role as chief economic counselor. Lazear is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, as well as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Labor Economics. He was the Society of Labor Economists' past President. Professor Lazear has written extensively on labor markets and personnel issues, microeconomic theory, worker compensation and productivity, government policies on discrimination, affirmative action, and comparable worth, educational policy, unemployment, culture, language, and diversity issues, and the doctrine of employment at will. He has over 100 articles and eleven books to his credit. The book Personnel Economics by Professor Lazear builds on his Wicksell Lectures from 1993. He was awarded the Melamed Prize in 1998, which recognized this work as the greatest study by a business school professor anywhere in the globe during the preceding two years. He earned the Distinguished Teaching Award and the Ph.D. Faculty Distinguished Service Award from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. Lazear was awarded the IZA Prize in Labor Economics, which is presented to the individual considered to have made the greatest contribution to labor economics in the world. It was largely for his work in personnel economics that he received this honor. Lazear received the Jacob Mincer Prize from the Society of Labor Economics in June 2006 for his lifetime contributions to the discipline. He is the recipient of two honorary doctorates. Professor Lazear has served as an advisor to the governments of Czechoslovakia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and Georgia, in addition to his previous activities in Washington. Professor Lazear grew up in Los Altos, California, where he was born in 1948. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his doctorate in economics from Harvard University.
