Edna Campbell, a 5'8" guard for the Sacramento Monarchs in the WNBA, is most known for continuing her basketball career after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The Phoenix Mercury picked her as the 10th overall pick in the 1999 draught, but she was left unprotected in the expansion draught the following year, and the Seattle Storm took her. She quickly established herself as the new franchise's go-to player, but she was sent to the Sacramento Monarchs after the club concluded with a 6-26 record. Campbell was diagnosed with breast cancer during the second of her four seasons in Sacramento. She was welcomed back to a loud ovation for the Monarchs' last game versus Seattle during the 2002 season after getting treatment. Despite her sickness, Campbell continued to perform and has become a symbol for many cancer survivors. She was named the WNBA's national spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation's anti-cancer work in 2003, and she earned the league's Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. Campbell joined the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2005 and played for them for one season before retiring on February 28, 2006. Fans voted Edna Campbell's recovery from breast cancer as the year's Most Inspirational. Edna was recruited as a television analyst for the San Antonio Silver Stars games shortly after retiring from basketball. In 2008, she became a nurse and began teaching high school girls, which marked her return to basketball.
