Ed Newton-Rex is a British entrepreneur, composer, and expert in generative AI. He is known for his foundational work on emerging AI technology and protecting artistry. Born in London, he graduated at the top of his class in Music from Cambridge University. Initially a choral composer, he created Jukedeck, the first AI music generation company. Jukedeck created over a million original compositions and won awards before being acquired by ByteDance in 2019.
At ByteDance, he led the AI music lab. He later served as Product Director for TikTok in Europe, focusing on its AI recommendation algorithm, before becoming Chief Product Officer for Voisey. In 2021, he joined Stability AI as VP of Audio, where his team's product, Stable Audio, was recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the Best Inventions of 2023. Still, he resigned in November 2023 due to ethical concerns regarding unlicensed creative work used in AI training.
