Ben Crenshaw has been a professional golfer since 1973 when he turned pro. The San Antonio-Texas Open was Crenshaw's debut Tour tournament, and he won it. Crenshaw's seemingly smooth game and easygoing demeanor quickly gained him respect from the Tour's other players, earning him the moniker Gentle Ben over time.
In 1991, Crenshaw was awarded the Bobby Jones Award, the highest distinction bestowed by the United States Golf Association on its members. Crenshaw was especially moved by the accolade since Bobby Jones had long been his golfing hero and role model.
