He grew up watching movies with his father as a youngster. In 1986, he graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia. In the 1990s, Tichenor worked as Geraldine Peroni's associate editor on numerous films, including Robert Altman's The Player (1992). His first editing credit was for Robert Altman's Jazz '34. (1996).
Tichenor stepped in after Peroni's death in 2004 to finish his mentor's editing of Brokeback Mountain (directed by Ang Lee). Tichenor has worked with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson on several occasions. Anderson's Boogie Nights (1997) was Tichenor's first big editing job, for which he was nominated for a Satellite Award. The American Cinema Editors have elected Tichenor to membership.
