Their collaboration and camaraderie have now become a model for others to follow. During the Nazi occupation of Poland, Zohara grew up. Her Jewish parents were able to go on the Aryan side outside the ghetto and survive the Holocaust by getting the baptismal certificates and other credentials of a Polish Catholic family. They were eventually able to conceal in plain sight. On the other side of the street, the Petschauers lived. His father was an SS officer, and he was born and reared in Germany. He was reared under Nazi Germany's laws as a kid, and it was only later in life that he came to terms with his family's history. Boyd is the co-director of the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies at Appalachian State University, where Petschauer met him as an academic colleague. They now use their relationship and connection to inform people about their experiences through one of history's most destructive storms, sharing their tales and lessons gained.
