In September 2014, Dr. Mary Alice Heuschel joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's K-12 Education team as Deputy Director for Strategy, Planning, and Management. Mary Alice is in charge of the foundation's operational and strategic planning, budgeting, investment, portfolio, evaluation, and data management, as well as the execution of Foundation-wide business plans and initiatives.
When Governor Jay Inslee was elected to the state of Washington in January 2013, she served as his Chief of Staff. Dr. Heuschel spent seven years as the superintendent of the Renton School District and six years as the Deputy State Superintendent at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction before joining the Governor's office.
