Dr. Joan Clos is the Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and has been appointed by the United Nations General Assembly to the position of Under-Secretary-General. He's been in this position since October 2010. He is a medical doctor who has had a remarkable career in public service and diplomacy.
He was born in Barcelona on June 29, 1949. From 1997 until 2006, he was twice elected Mayor of Barcelona, serving two terms. Between 2006 until 2008, he served as Spain's Minister of Industry, Tourism, and Trade. He was the Spanish Ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan before entering the United Nations.
