Jeffrey Ogbonna Green Ogbar grew up in Los Angeles, California, and was born in Chicago. Morehouse College in Atlanta awarded him a BA in History in 1991. He received his MA ('93) and Ph.D. ('97) in American history from Indiana University in Bloomington, with a minor in African studies.

He has been a history professor at the University of Connecticut since 1997. He was the Director of the Institute for African American Studies from 2003 until 2009. From 2009 to 2012, he was Associate Dean for Humanities at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He was designated Vice Provost for Diversity at the University in June 2012.
