Herbert Wayne Boyer is a biotechnology researcher and entrepreneur. He and Stanley N. Cohen and Paul Berg developed a way to coax bacteria into generating foreign proteins, kicking off the discipline of genetic engineering. By 1969, he had conducted research on a few of restriction enzymes from the E.coli bacteria that had very beneficial characteristics.
He received the National Medal of Science in 1990, was a co-recipient of the Lemelson–MIT Prize in 1996, and was a co-founder of Genentech. Boyer and venture financier Robert A. Swanson co-founded Genetech, the first specialized biotechnology firm, in 1976. From 1976 until 1990, he was also a vice president of the firm.
