Hawa Abdi, M.D., runs a refugee hospital and camp in Somalia that serves almost 100,000 people, mostly women and children, in a place where most charities refuse to go. Abdi rose to worldwide notoriety in May 2010 after fending off an attack by hundreds of Islamist terrorists on her camp.
The gunmen backed down after she and hundreds of other women risked protesting the extremists' takeover, even agreeing to Abdi's demand for a formal apology. Abdi and her two daughters, also physicians, Deeqo and Amina Mohamed, were awarded Glamour's Women of the Year in 2010.
