Dr. Barbara Bass Biography

Barbara Lee Bass, M.D. is a professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and the chief of the department of surgery at The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Bass, a general surgeon with a surgical oncology practice, has worked in academic surgery for 30 years, treating patients, educating new and experienced surgeons, conducting research programs in fundamental, translational, and clinical research, and serving the surgical community in leadership capacities. She was Chair of the American Board of Surgery, which certifies surgeons for practice; Chair of the American College of Surgeons' Board of Governors and member of the Board of Regents; and President of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, among other positions. Dr. Bass has spearheaded projects to establish new surgical training paths as well as the development of the NSQIP, the first national system to assess surgical quality. Dr. Bass is a member of several editorial boards and has published extensively in the fields of surgical quality and education, cancer, and physiology. The Association of Women Surgeons has given her the Nina Starr Braunwald and Olga Jonasson awards for their work in promoting and enhancing surgery as a vocation for women. Her most recent initiative is the Methodist Organization for Technology Innovation and Education (MITIE), an education and research institute devoted to retraining surgeons in new technologies and conducting research on the development of new technologies to aid in that critical process. Dr. Bass, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, formerly worked in the VA health care system and served in the US Army Medical Corps as a Captain.
