For his play Quills, he received the Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting and the Kesselring Award for Best New American Play from the National Arts Club. He then went on to create the screenplay adaption, which marked his first foray into the film industry.
The National Board of Review named the picture Best Picture, and it was nominated for three Academy Awards. His screenplay was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and won the Writers Guild of America's Paul Selvin Award.
