Doug Sanders was born in Cedartown, Georgia, on July 24, 1933. He was a poor boy from the Georgia backwoods who picked cotton as a child. He received a golf scholarship to the University of Florida after winning the National Junior Chamber of Commerce Tournament, and he was the subject of the film The Boy Next Door.
Sanders became the first amateur to win the Canadian Open after attending the University of Florida. Doug has won 20 PGA Pro Tournaments since joining the circuit in 1957. Since 1957, there have only been six players in the world who have won more than 20 PGA Circuit Championships on the regular tour.
