Doug Ellin, the show's creator and executive producer, traveled to Hollywood from New York in 1990 to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. Ellin worked in the mailroom of New Line Cinema while touring the circuit at comedy clubs such as The Improv and The Comedy Store.
Ellin's career was able to take off, although on a new path, because of his link with New Line Production Head Michael DeLuca.
