Doug Atkins, a former defensive end with the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints, was born on May 8, 1930, in Humboldt, Tennessee. He attended the University of Tennessee and played football under famed head coach Robert Neyland. He is a Pro Football Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame inductee.
Atkins was a fearsome defender who excelled at using his enormous height and quickness. At 6'8", Atkins would frequently swat passes down at the line of scrimmage, using his high jump talents to leapfrog blockers and get to the quarterback.
