She worked as a biochemist at Harvard Medical School for ten years before earning a Ph.D. in sociology. She teaches Issues in Science, Technology, and Public Policy at KSG and Law, Technology, and Society at Harvard Law School. She is a founding member of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
Her research focuses on several aspects of international science and technology, including industry, university, and governance arrangements as a result of increasing commercialization of science; changes in universities and industry brought on by Information Technologies; and Human Resources—scientists and engineers' education and career development.
