Her passion for retail clothing led her to The Fashion Institute of America in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned her bachelor's degree in 1972.
She stayed in Atlanta for a brief time and worked for College Town Sportswear at the Atlanta Apparel Mart. In 1973, she returned to Charleston, South Carolina, and began working as a buyer at Kerrison's Department Store. She was recruited by Byer California in 1974 and relocated to San Francisco, California.
