Why can't building materials be more versatile, wonders architect Doris Kim Sung? Why can't they behave like clothes or even human skin? Sung, who studied biology at Princeton University with the intention of going to medical school, now works as an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Southern California, where she integrates biological ideas into her work.
She investigates architecture as a physical extension of the body, questioning the idea that structures should be immobile and climate-controlled. Rather, they should be able to self-ventilate in order to adapt to their surroundings. Sung's artwork Bloom was on display at Silver Lake, Los Angeles, in November 2011.
