Donald Johanson is the founder of the Institute of Human Origins and an American paleoanthropologist. In 1972, he embarked on his first exploratory journey to Ethiopia, then finished his Ph.D. and began teaching at Case Western Reserve University the following year. He found AL 288-1, a fragmentary skeleton of a female australopithecine who became known as Lucy, in 1974.
In 1975, he and his colleagues discovered The First Family, a large collection of fossils in a single location. More hominid fossils were unearthed in 1976, along with the world's earliest stone tools, dating back 2.5 million years. He and his colleague Tim White called the Australopithecus afarensis species he had found in 1978.
