Don Weeden Biography

Don Weeden had a nearly 25-year career in the international population and economic development field, serving in various field and management positions for Columbia University, the International Planned Parenthood Federation, and other non-governmental organizations devoted to increasing access to family planning services before taking over as Executive Director of the Weeden Foundation six years ago. He spent 20 years living and working in South and Southeast Asia, where he became an expert on population issues. In addition to the United States, he has worked in Mexico, Eastern Europe, and Sub-Saharan Africa. The Weeden Foundation, located in New York City, sponsors a wide range of national and international initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity. Don is a member of the IUCN's Mountain Biome group and the Co-chair of the Consultative Group on Biological Diversity's Land and Freshwater Conservation Working Group. The Foundation's population initiative, which began more than two decades ago to address both worldwide and domestic population increase, continues to fund high-impact advocacy programs aimed at policymakers and opinion leaders. The program's major domestic population goal is for the United States to develop a national strategy to deal effectively and fairly with all sources of population increase in the United States, including immigration, as recommended by President Clinton's Council on Sustainable Development. The Foundation also funds a program in the United States to encourage sustainable consumerism. Don is now a member of the Environmental Grantmakers Association's working group on Sustainable Production and Consumption's Steering Committee.
