For his involvement in CBS's first Survivor show, Dirk Been is still regarded as the first Christian reality competitor. Growing up on his parent's Wisconsin dairy farm, Dirk acquired important survival qualities such as responsibility and dedication long before he appeared on the famous program.

Sub-zero temperatures and rigorous work may teach a kid a lot about survival, according to Been.

"You survive the work no matter what," he says, "and trust God to care for your family." Throughout high school and college, Dirk continued to engage with young people as a sports coach and counselor for organizations such as The Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA.

Dirk's passion for basketball began in college when he was swiftly promoted to team captain and named Academic All-Conference for three years. Dirk was baptized as a Christian at an early age and was a frequent attendee at church. Dirk worked in the youth group for several years before deciding to pursue a degree in theology.

Dirk wanted to travel the world after graduating from Seattle Pacific University in 1998, and while visiting a buddy in Los Angeles in 1999, his ATM credit card was taken and his bank account was emptied. Dirk was not forced to return home as a result of the experience; rather, it inspired him to pursue God's will even more closely.

Dirk, who rarely watched television, was watching the end of a news program when he saw an advertisement for a new show called Survivor. Dirk turned in his audition tape the day before the deadline, and out of 6,000 entries, he was one of the first to be chosen for this new journey.

Dirk was one of 16 people who were stranded on a distant island and had to rely on his own abilities as well as collaboration to endure the unknown. Despite the fact that he did not win the million-dollar prize, Dirk got a new perspective on life that cannot be quantified in cash.

Dirk has recently been featured on multiple entertainment and news programs across the country, including national shows such as Late Night With David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood, Extra, and E! Entertainment. His newfound celebrity status has come as a surprise to him.

Dirk has been dubbed "The Christian Survivor" in magazines such as TV Guide and People Magazine, and he is flattered, saying, "I confess I needed the Bible with me on that island because when you're on an island with nothing else, you re-evaluate your connection with humans and God." Dirk continues to encourage education and a life free of sex, drugs, and alcohol among today's youngsters.

Dirk was a virgin till the day of his wedding in 2004. With his wife and two children, he lives in Madison, Wisconsin. Spending time with his family, playing basketball, and reading are some of his favorite pastimes.
