Desmond Patton is a pioneering social scientist, professor, and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, holding the Brian and Randi Schwartz University Professorship with joint appointments in the School of Social Policy & Practice and Annenberg School for Communication.

He directs the SAFELab, focusing on social media's impact on youth well-being, mental health, trauma, violence, and grief, particularly for communities of color. With a PhD from the University of Chicago, Patton coined "Internet Banging" to describe online gang-related expressions. His work integrates social work, data science, and AI to analyze digital threats and develop tools for aggression detection.
