Derek Sholl was born in Southern California and developed his baseball abilities on ball diamonds throughout his childhood until he was excellent enough to be picked by the Kansas City Royals. Sholl played a number of years in the Royals minor-league farm system before his professional baseball career was cut short due to a series of injuries.
