Dennis Mitchell, a native of Havelock, North Carolina, finished fourth in the 100 meters at the 1988 Summer Olympics and lost out on a likely gold medal in the 4x100 m relay because the American team was disqualified in the preliminaries when Calvin Smith and Lee McNeill made an out-of-zone pass. Mitchell won the NCAA 200-meter finals in 1989.
Mitchell set his first world record in the 4x100 m relay at Zurich in 1991, barely a month before the World Championships, with a time of 37.67. Mitchell was a member of the American 4x100 m relay team at the World Championships, which established a new world best of 37.50 in the final.
