Denis Leary attended Emerson College in Boston after a childhood in the 1960s when he tried his hand at acting and writing. He was a founding member of Emerson's Comedy Workshop, and after graduation, he taught at the institution for five years. By that time, he had published many magazine articles and had dabbled in stand-up comedy.
He and his wife Ann traveled to London in 1990 to appear on BBC's Paramount City. Ann's water broke that weekend. Their weekend excursion turned into a month-long stay, and Denis, having nothing else to do in London, composed a one-man comedy show.
