Debi Thomas was the first African-American figure skater to win a medal in the Winter Olympics. At the 1988 Winter Olympics, she earned a bronze medal. In 2000, Thomas was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Thomas won the 1986 U.S.
national title as well as the 1986 World Championships, earning him the Athlete of the Year award on ABC's Wide World of Sports that year. Since Tenley Albright in the 1950s, she was the only female athlete to win those titles while attending college full-time.
