Debi Thomas was the first African-American figure skater to win a medal in the Winter Olympics. At the 1988 Winter Olympics, she earned a bronze medal. In 2000, Thomas was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Thomas won the 1986 U.S.

national title as well as the 1986 World Championships, earning him the Athlete of the Year award on ABC's Wide World of Sports that year. Since Tenley Albright in the 1950s, she was the only female athlete to win those titles while attending college full-time.

She was the first African-American woman to win a national title in women's singles figure skating in the United States. During this period, Thomas was a pre-med student at Stanford University, which was rare for a top American figure skater to do while competing.

Thomas was afflicted in both ankles with Achilles tendinitis in 1987 and struggled in the US Nationals, finishing second to Jill Trenary. She bounced back in the World Championships, finishing a close second to Katarina Witt of East Germany. Thomas recovered the US National Championship in January 1988.

Thomas returned to school after her figure skating career to pursue her dream of becoming an orthopedic physician. She earned an engineering degree from Stanford University in 1991 and a medical degree from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in 1997.
