Tepper was born and raised in Pittsburgh, where he attended the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University.
Following his MBA, Tepper worked in mutual funds before joining Goldman Sachs, where he eventually rose to the position of head trader on the high-yield desk. He held this post for eight years before leaving in 1992 to found Appaloosa Management, a hedge fund that specialized in troubled firms.
