He served four years as a fighter pilot based in Holland after West Point and Flying School. He went on to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to further his education before enrolling in Test Pilot School. David's first mission was aboard Gemini 8, which, under the direction of Neil Armstrong, completed the first docking in space.
In 1969, he returned to space on Apollo 9, a mission that tested all of the lunar equipment. The Apollo 15 Mission, the first scientific investigation of the Moon, was then led by David. This three-day mission in space featured the first motorized voyage to the Moon.
