David Pearson, often known as the Silver Fox, started on the Grand National racing circuit in 1960 and was named Rookie of the Year that same year. In 1966, 1968, and 1969, he won the NASCAR championship. He is regarded as one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time, and his battles with Richard Petty are legendary.
Their most memorable collision occurred on the penultimate lap of the 1976 Daytona 500 when they were running bumper-to-bumper. They collided head-on with each other's front fender and both collided with the wall. Petty's damaged car slid off the course barely twenty-five yards from the finish line, the engine died, and he was unable to restart it.
